How on earth did I allow things to escalate this far?

Perched on the edge of the mattress in the hotel’s most exclusive penthouse suite, Lee Jaeha stared blankly at the floor.

Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, relentless rain swept across the city. Seoul’s bleak skyline sagged beneath the downpour, heavy and waterlogged, its melancholic gray contours dissolving into the distant horizon.

The architecture of the city, however, was the furthest thing from his mind.

The muted, rhythmic tapping of rain against the thick glass mingled with the sharp, continuous hiss of running water echoing from the master bathroom.

Jang Taegeon was in the shower.

Jaeha pressed both palms to his temples, desperately attempting to reconstruct the sequence of events from the previous night and steady his muddled thoughts.

The moment Kim Sumin disappeared through the coffee shop doors, Jang Taegeon moved into the vacant seat and completely blocked Jaeha’s path of escape.

He did not ask permission. He merely stated that they needed somewhere private to talk.

“You’re attracting far too much attention down here, Executive Director Lee Jaeha.” Taegeon’s large hand idly smoothed the starched fabric of Jaeha’s collar where the hot chocolate had soaked into the seam.

The physical proximity had left Jaeha far too flustered to formulate a coherent response.

Taking his silence as permission to continue, the Alpha studied every minute shift in Jaeha’s expression. “Or we could simply go upstairs together.”

With one hand buried casually in the pocket of his dress pants, Taegeon tilted his chin toward the ceiling. His speech drifted effortlessly between casual slang and strict corporate honorifics, each tonal shift delivered like a detached structural addendum to his utterly expressionless face.

The words carried the unmistakable edge of a mocking challenge, yet his delivery was so arid and indifferent that Jaeha could not determine whether he was testing a boundary or casually issuing an insult.

An apathetic tone paired with an insufferably haughty cadence, all concealed behind a face that revealed absolutely no emotional information. That profound contradiction, that cruel biological paradox, seemed to embody the very essence of Jang Taegeon.

Jaeha drew his brows together and gave a sharp, dismissive shake of his head. Even if this man had thoroughly sabotaged his dreams and driven him to dismantle his engagement, he had no intention of surrendering to the physical reality of the situation so readily. Despite the reckless, spiteful declarations he had hurled at Sumin, he had planned to maintain a clinical distance from Taegeon until the legal intricacies of the corporate merger were safely resolved.

He wanted to preserve at least a shred of basic courtesy. More importantly, he needed time to clear his head and systematically dismantle this irrational fixation before it derailed his entire career.

“I have nothing to discuss with you.” Jaeha forced his voice into a firm, unyielding register.

He refused to let himself become trapped in an enclosed space with this man.

A dark, primal premonition stirred beneath his reason. Every instinct warned him that if he allowed himself to be alone with Jang Taegeon that day, his entire life would veer into a realm of absolute and irreversible danger. The most terrifying part was that his intellect could not identify the precise nature of the threat from which he was attempting to protect himself.

Taegeon merely looked down at him. His pupils were so intensely black that the irises and centers seemed to merge into a single abyssal void, and his gaze pierced straight through Jaeha’s meticulously constructed corporate armor.

A violent chill raced down Jaeha’s spine.

Against his will, his treacherous mind replayed a vivid sequence from his explicit dreams, sending a wave of mortification burning beneath his skin.

Although Jaeha had never confessed it to his medical staff, he possessed a mild but clinically significant germaphobia regarding physical intimacy. He loathed the messy, unpredictable friction of unwanted touch, which was why his seasonal ruts as a dominant Alpha had always passed with bloodless, mechanical efficiency.

His subconscious, however, had spent weeks constructing a succession of deeply submissive and promiscuous scenarios. Now the very demon from those obscene nightmares stood directly before him, dressed in a pristine, tailored German suit.

The contrast was unbearable.

As Jaeha struggled to suppress the storm raging through his mind, Taegeon leaned closer and lowered his voice to a dangerous whisper.

“So, you tell your fiancé that you’ve suddenly developed an interest in me, yet you claim you have absolutely nothing to say to my face?”

Jaeha’s composure shattered.

Decades of rigorous preparation in corporate succession, business diplomacy, and the maintenance of an unreadable poker face scattered instantly to the wind.

He had once endured intensive crisis negotiation training under a specialized mercenary veteran of the Middle East, mastering the clinical art of concealing microexpressions during high-stakes hostage scenarios. By every measure of logic, Lee Jaeha should have remained an impenetrable fortress of stoicism.

Evidently, the mercenary had swindled his family, charging an exorbitant fee for thoroughly useless advice, because not a single protocol surfaced in Jaeha’s mind.

Even as his intellect identified the rising panic and ordered him to break the cognitive loop, his throat remained clamped shut. His hijacked mind could do nothing except replay Taegeon’s words with obsessive precision.

Taegeon tilted his head, his gaze probing the depths of Jaeha’s eyes as though mapping the exact trajectory of his panic with surgical accuracy.

A slow, dark smirk spread across the Alpha’s face. “Looks like you finally have something to say to me. Right, Executive Director?”

That was the precise moment beyond which retreat became impossible.

Minutes later, the two Alphas bypassed the hotel’s public areas and ascended through a private elevator directly into the top-floor penthouse suite. The doors slid open onto an expansive living room, where a personal manager had already been stationed to receive them.

Taegeon cast Jaeha a brief, weighty glance, silently questioning whether a third person truly needed to remain in the room.

Jaeha immediately shook his head in response to the unspoken demand. The color had already drained from his skin, leaving him pale and visibly compromised. He was desperate to minimize the number of witnesses to his sudden and inexplicable undoing.

The hotel manager bowed deeply before retreating through the service elevator, leaving the two men enclosed within an absolute, suffocating silence.

While Jaeha stood motionless in the center of the vast living room, Jang Taegeon casually shrugged off his suit jacket and tossed it onto the leather sofa with the easy familiarity of a man returning to his own home.

Jaeha could only stare at the discarded fabric. His breath caught as the imagined echo of a shower seemed to resonate through the suite.

He had envisioned this exact scenario.

In the solitary theater of his mind, Jang Taegeon would enter a hotel room, and while Jaeha watched with bated breath, the man would slowly strip away his suit jacket.

“It’s only brandy.” Taegeon stood at the minibar, his heavy gaze resting on the bottle’s gold-foil label.

Wrenched from his reverie, Jaeha shoved his index finger beneath the knot of his tie and pulled it loose. He rarely touched hard liquor, yet his throat felt unbearably parched, and a wretched, raw thirst twisted deep within his stomach.

The air still carried the suffocating residue of Taegeon’s dominant Alpha pheromones. Jaeha was desperate to smother the scent, even if doing so required drowning his senses beneath the sharp, searing burn of cheap alcohol.

He straightened his posture and prayed that his voice would not betray the frantic rhythm of his pulse. “That will be fine.”

“Ice?”

“Yes.”

With smooth, methodical efficiency, Jang Taegeon broke the bottle’s seal and poured the amber liquor into two crystal tumblers. He dropped a single, precisely measured cube of ice into one glass but left his own untouched, draining the neat brandy in one brutal swallow.

Without speaking, he poured himself a second measure and slid the chilled tumbler across the dark wood toward Jaeha.

Every movement carried an uncanny, practiced familiarity, as though the two of them had performed this exact domestic ritual a thousand times before.

Jaeha accepted the glass without acknowledging him. Before the ice could begin to soften beneath the warmth of the crystal, he emptied the brandy down his throat in one desperate swallow.

Taegeon glanced sideways at him, one eyebrow twitching with faint amusement. “You hold your liquor remarkably well, Director. It’s quite a pleasant sight.”

Jaeha’s jaw tightened.

Is this man slipping back into casual speech again?

Before he could begin analyzing the breach of etiquette, Taegeon turned toward the minibar, his features immediately settling into their familiar, impassive mask.

It was as though the compliment had been nothing more than a stray thought spoken aloud to an empty room.

As the fiery heat of the alcohol settled into the pit of his stomach, Jaeha refused to allow the silence to stretch any further. “You’ve misunderstood my actions.”

Noticing the sharp, defensive tension in Jaeha’s shoulders, Taegeon offered him a faint and fleeting smile.

The expression was a dangerous contradiction, simultaneously mocking and intensely intimate, erasing the distance between them before Jaeha could assemble a single defense.

“Do I look like a man who misunderstood something?” Taegeon asked softly.

He knocked back his liquor without ever allowing his gaze to leave Jaeha’s face.

Jaeha scrambled to gather the scattered threads of his thoughts, but his internal calculations fractured beneath the pressure. This volatile intimacy had never been included among the variables in his strategy.

Even if he had resolved to confess his interest eventually, he had never intended to surrender his leverage so completely on an arbitrary evening.

Fighting to preserve his expression as a smooth, unreadable void, Jaeha countered, “Regarding Sumin… I only made those remarks because I knew a brutal and miserable truth was the sole weapon capable of forcing him to accept the dissolution of our engagement.”

“Is that so?”

Taegeon stepped slowly away from the minibar, predatory intent sharpening his movements as his voice descended into a dry purr.

“And did he accept it?”

The constant, slippery boundary between Taegeon’s casual dialect and formal corporate honorifics left Jaeha completely disoriented.

For someone as fastidious and cautious as Lee Jaeha, that state of absolute unpredictability was pure agony. He was forced to confront a devastating truth.

He had fallen completely for an Alpha he barely knew.

The realization that Taegeon possessed no concept whatsoever of ordinary social courtesy left a bitter, metallic taste in his mouth.

Taegeon set his empty tumbler aside and moved closer, one large hand still loosely gripping the neck of the amber bottle. A visible pocket of space remained between them, yet despite the undeniable physical distance, Jaeha experienced a primal and visceral sense of danger, a raw terror he had never encountered throughout his life as a dominant Alpha.

“Executive Director, you live so high among the corporate clouds that you must have missed the neighborhood rumors about men like me.”

Taegeon took another measured step forward. He crossed the room with the silent, lethal precision of a great cat, the heels of his leather shoes making no sound against the floorboards. His presence felt as vast and immovable as a cliff face.

“If you hire a thug to handle your dirty work, you need to be prepared to settle the debt.”

A cold smile touched his lips.

The expression felt entirely fabricated.

Jaeha bit the inside of his lip, his knuckles whitening as he fought to maintain his composure. The dense scent of crushed rugosa roses and sea salt curled around his ankles. What had been no more than a faint trace upon their arrival now surged across the floorboards like a rapidly rising tide.

Ignoring the gooseflesh spreading over his forearms, Jaeha answered sharply, “Name your price. How much do I owe you?”

“You sound confident.” Taegeon erased the remaining distance until his massive frame towered directly over Jaeha and invaded the limits of his personal space. “Can you actually deliver everything you promise?”

“As long as the terms aren’t completely absurd…”

Jaeha had believed several inches still remained between them, but within a single heartbeat, that fragile margin of safety disappeared.

He felt utterly cornered, like living prey pinned beneath the suffocating shadow of a carnivore.

Taegeon tilted the bottle and unceremoniously poured more liquor into Jaeha’s crystal glass.

“Since this is our first transaction, I’ll be lenient.” Taegeon withdrew the physical pressure with effortless grace, as though the entire terrifying display had been no more than a joke used to pass the time. “For tonight, a simple drinking buddy will be enough.”
